Phase One:

(the 1800s - Slow Fashion)

Fashion before the 1800s was slow and custom-made, with no difference between haute couture and ready-to-wear apparel. The Industrial Revolution changed this, with clothing being manufactured for each individual and made to last a lifetime. People started dressing up for style, not necessity.

Phase Two:

Present

(the 1960s-now)

It’s not uncommon for fast fashion retailers to introduce new products multiple times in one week to stay on trend. The most dangerous message portrayed by fast-fashion retailers is that clothes are disposable.

Phase Three:

There are many ways to be a responsible shopper and it all comes down to how you treat your old clothes. Proper disposal of used clothes or clothes that don’t benefit you anymore is an integral part of consumerism behavior.
